A unidentified individual discovered deceased in a secluded Welsh lake has been assigned a facial reconstruction using the same advanced techniques that produced a cutting-edge digital representation of King Richard III.

Law enforcement is urgently trying to determine the identity of a severely decomposed body discovered floating in a wetsuit at the Claerwen reservoir in October 2024.

Detectives have not excluded the possibility that he could be a victim ofcrimeand his body was placed in the wetsuit and discarded in the reservoir to mislead the police.

His genetic material and handprint details and dental information were entered into the police national database and then forwarded toInterpol and drew a blank.

However, the police chief overseeing the investigation recalled reading about how scientists had reconstructed a face from the remains of King Richard III following the discovery of his body beneath a Leicester car park.

Inspector Anthea Ponting from Dyfed–Powys Police stated, ‘I thought if they were capable of doing that with remains discovered 500 years ago, they might be able to assist us.’

Detective Ponting reached out to Face Lab at Liverpool John Moores University, an institution that combines art and science to develop facial imaging technology.

It was specialists on site who developed a digital speaking avatar of King Richard III, based on forensic skull reconstruction from his remains discovered in 2013.

The team from The Face Lab received images, a post-mortem document, a forensic dental report, and a CT scan of the unidentified man discovered in the reservoir located north of Rhayader, Powys.

A three-dimensional model was created with the help of medical imaging software, after which the team utilized his dental expertise to shape the individual’s lower face and mouth, featuring prominent teeth and a left-sided crossbite.

The man’s facial structure, including his lips and nose, was determined by incorporating muscle details, revealing that he had a round chin, a square jawline, and a nose that pointed downward.

DI Ponting stated, “Thanks to Face Lab, we have now received a very clear and detailed approximation of what the man looked like.”

The picture has already been checked using the National Police Computer and has been sent to Interpol.

This is a relative of someone, and I would greatly appreciate the chance to reunite him with his family members who could be searching for him.

A dog walker found the body at the 650-acre reservoir that provides water to Birmingham and the West Midlands.

Law enforcement is confused as no vehicle was found abandoned in the parking area, and no garments were located anywhere in the remote scenic location.

DI Ponting stated, “Up until this point, the sole item we had to advance our inquiry was the wet suit the individual was wearing, which offered us minimal details regarding his height and weight.”

We are seeking a breakthrough to uncover his identity, origin, and the circumstances surrounding his death.

We urge individuals to examine the man’s face closely, and if you recognize him, we ask that you come forward.

Authorities remain open to all possibilities regarding the death of the unidentified man and the lack of any reports about his disappearance in the past 15 months.

A forensic examination indicated that the individual, who was between 30 and 60 years old, had been submerged in water for as long as 12 weeks.

His Zone 3 Agile wetsuit is an Extra Large size, indicating he is taller than 6 feet and weighs approximately 202–220 pounds with a chest measurement of 44–48 inches.

Professor Caroline Wilkinson, head of the Face Lab that collaborates with police departments around the globe, stated: ‘Creating facial images from skeletal remains can serve as a method for identification, offering fresh avenues of inquiry regarding a person’s identity.’
