Lebanon has been notified that U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres is scheduled to arrive in the country next Friday for a three-day visit, according to a media report.
He is set to meet with President Joseph Aoun, Speaker Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, and Army Commander General Rodolphe Haykal, according to al-Akhbar newspaper.
He will also tour the headquarters of the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and its locations in the southern region.
Guterres is also anticipated to meet with the leaders of U.N. organizations functioning in Lebanon to explore their part in managing the consequences of the conflict.
Guterres is set to host a press briefing on Saturday to disclose the United Nations’ stance on the recent events.
As per reliable sources, the Secretary-General might be considering a plan to bring back Resolution 1701 by introducing a new Security Council resolution that calls for an international force to be stationed in southern Lebanon.
This serves as a response to a recent decision that will conclude the UNIFIL mission’s authorization by the end of this year.
The United Nations is depending on nations that have sent troops to UNIFIL to establish connections with Lebanese and Israeli officials in order to gain their approval for keeping the force active. A suggestion developed by the U.N. Special Coordinator, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, regarding a European force to stay under global supervision is expected not to be reviewed.
