Britain will introduce airspace restrictions and send armed police to Windsor next week when President Bola Tinubu arrives for a state visit organized by King Charles III.

Tinubu is set to start the trip alongside his wife, Oluremi Tinubu, on Wednesday, March 18, with an event taking place at Windsor Castle.

On Wednesday, Thames Valley Police stated on its website that it is collaborating with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, the Royal Household, and other security organizations.

The force announced that airspace restrictions around Windsor Castle, which are in effect all year round, will be expanded on Wednesday, March 18, to apply from 7am until 11:59pm.

Chief Superintendent Adrian Hall from the Thames Valley Police’s Joint Operations Unit mentioned that the airspace restrictions were part of a larger security plan for the visit.

The air restrictions are only a portion of our comprehensive security plan for the state visit of Nigerian President Tinubu next week, which includes numerous measures you’ll notice and others that remain unseen.

“As a unit, we possess extensive experience in managing police operations at royal events in Windsor, with considerable planning and preparation invested in this occasion,” Hall stated.

He mentioned that the authority would adopt a firm approach in implementing the restrictions, cautioning that any violation would be considered a criminal act under the Air Navigation Order and might result in detention.

We will adopt a firm approach in implementing the restrictions; anyone who violates them will be committing a criminal offense under the Air Navigation Order and may face arrest.

The police commissioner stated that officers with specialized skills, such as search teams, the Mounted Section, traffic enforcement, and armed response units, would be stationed throughout Windsor, in addition to local policing efforts and Project Servator assets.

“We will also be sending many police officers to Windsor who have specific skills, such as our search teams, Mounted Section, Roads Policing, and armed units, while our local officers and Project Servator teams will also be present, interacting with the public,” he stated.

The authorities will also implement a wide-ranging closed-circuit television system, hostile vehicle prevention barriers, and additional secret security protocols for the event.

Hall stated, “We will also be utilizing the wide-ranging CCTV system in Windsor, Hostile Vehicle Mitigation barriers, and numerous other security protocols that you might not notice to ensure the event takes place securely.”

He called on the public to back the security operation by staying alert.

“The public has a vital role in supporting us, so we urge them to report any unusual behavior or anything that seems out of place by calling 101 or talking to one of our officers. In case of an urgent threat or emergency, please call 999,” Hall added.

Road closures and parking limitations will come into force on Tuesday, March 17, potentially causing temporary disruptions to roads in and near Windsor during the visit.

Thames Valley Police stated that they were receiving assistance from the Civil Aviation Authority and National Air Traffic Services in implementing the flight restrictions. Individuals who had valid reasons for operating drones were advised to send an email to TVPAirspaceRequests@thamesvalley.police.uk.
