Authorities responsible for implementing sanitation regulations in Lagos State have arrested five people as part of a dawn operation aimed at preventing open defecation and other environmental issues.
A video posted on X by Lagos State’s Environment and Water Resources Commissioner, Tokunbo Wahab, on Thursday disclosed this information.
As stated by the commissioner, the operation took place in Ebute Ero and nearby regions on Lagos Island.
A team combating open defecation is on patrol during the early hours in Ebute Ero and surrounding areas of Lagos Island, aiming to prevent open defecation and other environmental issues.
Five (5) individuals who failed to meet their obligations were captured in the operation.
They have been sent to the enforcement office at Sura-Simpson for additional inquiry and legal action, where they will be transferred to the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps headquarters in Oshodi for legal proceedings under current regulations.
Wahab stated that the operation is a part of continuous initiatives aimed at reducing open defecation and enhancing environmental hygiene throughout the state.
PUNCH Online states that the Lagos State Government has cautioned citizens and tourists against practicing open defecation.
The authorities also detained no fewer than 275 individuals from various regions of the state for openly defecating, even though 8,710 operational public restrooms were available.
