Thirty years since its initial broadcast,This Life will return to the BBCfor a completely new generation to appreciate this90s cult classic.
The groundbreaking British show – created by Amy Jenkins – featured a young actor in the beginning of their careerAndrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead) as well as Daniela Nardini, Jack Davenport, Amita Dhiri, and Jason Hughes.
The ensemble performed a set of young lawyers in their early twenties who lived together in south London, portraying their journey through friendship, aspirations, and the challenges of their twenties.
Alternatively, as the summary describes it with the phrase ‘raw, real and revolutionary’: ‘The most renowned houseshare of the 90s. Five young lawyers are striving for success – yet behind the scenes, they are dealing with love, drugs, and indulgence.’
Recognized as a ‘landmark drama’ featuring ‘fresh, raw, and unfiltered acting,’ it emerged as the ‘defining series of the decade’ and a snapshot of London life during that period.
Behind the scenes, the program also served as a productive environment for Britain’s emerging directors, includingI May Destroy YouThe Bafta-winning director Sam Miller and Harry Bradbeer (director of hits such asFleabag and Enola Holmes).
A 32-episode repeat series, providing a journey through past memories, will be hosted by Daniela.
Audiences and reviewers have both commended its significance as a cultural milestone and lasting influence – even though it had a brief run on television.
referred to it as ‘the best drama of the 90s’, stating ‘no other television show succeeded in reflecting the Cool Britannia spirit as effectively as This Life’.
In a 2021 review, The GuardianHe said, ‘It was the kind of television that made you want to call all your friends right after an episode to go over it together. It was amusing but also heartbreaking.’
It seemed strangely authentic. It captured the chaos and brilliance of being in your 20s in a manner that is rarely shown on mainstream television.
And in a review published shortly after its release in 1996,The Independentshared: ‘What makes you continue watching, despite limited clear progression, is a sense of observation – the dialogue, except for a few instances here and there, still maintains an almost overheard feel.’
The series has received acclaim for its wide range of narratives, including the gay character Warren, who is dealing with his identity and conversations about interracial relationships.
On IMDb, user shootingstar82 commented: ‘Although there are a few instances where This Life seems somewhat outdated, it generally remains strong and is still highly enjoyable to watch.
This is among the exceptional British television series that I am eager to watch once more at a later time.
‘A nearly flawless examination of the phase in life where carefree socializing transitions into mature responsibility,’ ideorio remarked.
Talking about its surprising success, and what attracted him to the series in 2020, Miles actor Jack revealed toThe GuardianThe writing was quite distinct from typical television. If you consumed a large amount of drugs, it didn’t always result in immediate death.
If you engaged in unprotected sexual activity, it didn’t necessarily mean you became HIV positive. It was appreciated because there was no preaching. If you’re 22, you might make some really poor choices, but that’s acceptable. Take it easy.
This Life comes back to BBC Four at 10pm on Wednesday, March 18. The first and second seasons, along with the 10-year reunion, will be accessible on iPlayer starting at 6am.
