Two Texas representatives — Democrat Greg Casar andRepublican John Cornyn— involved in a heated debate regarding the continuing DHS shutdown outside an Austin airport on Monday, with one journalist comparing it to a “Lone Star showdown.

Cornyn, who aims to maintain his public presence as he navigates through aheated GOP Senate primary, made a scheduled stop at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport on Monday, handing out burgers toTSA screeners Working without compensation during the ongoing closure of the Department of Homeland Security. The House Republican leader has attributed the shutdown to Democrats, who are seeking new regulations to limit the agency’s immigration enforcement as part of the funding legislation. Democrats have specifically introduced partial funding measures to compensate TSA staff and other non-immigration-related DHS employees, but Republicans have prevented these initiatives from passing.

Casar, a Democrat representing Texas’s 34th District and known for his progressive views, challenged Cornyn during the visit, leading to a fiery exchange regarding the shutdown, which was recorded on video and posted on social media.by CSPANCasar urged Cornyn to support a partial TSA funding bill, which Cornyn rejected, stating it was “unacceptable” and urging Democrats to endorse a complete DHS funding measure.

Why don’t you instruct your Democrats to support paying these individuals in need?” Cornyn stated upon arriving at the airport. “I have supported it repeatedly.

“A bipartisan bill exists to fund only the TSA. Can we work on that together?” Casar asked in reply.

Following the rejection of the suggestion as “unacceptable,” Cornyn mentioned “terrorist attacks” on Austin’s 6th Street, probably alluding to a recent mass shooting that resulted in 15 injuries and four deaths, including the perpetrator. The Republican stated that DHS contributed to ensuring public safety, then walked away from Casar without responding to his efforts to continue the conversation.

Later, within the airport, Cornyn said to reporters, “They chose not to compensate the individuals who ensure our safety at airports and in the skies, in an attempt to gain some political benefit.”
