Brendan Carr, the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) appointed by Donald Trump, isthreatening retaliation against broadcasterswho provide unfavorable reporting on U.S. military actions against Iran. After Carr warned of revoking their broadcasting licenses, President Trumppraised him on his Truth Social platform— expressing that he was “excited” that Carr was “reviewing the credentials” of certain “Highly Unpatriotic ‘News’ Organizations.”
However, Robert Francis Prevost, also known as Pope Leo the 14th, holds a completely different perspective.
In a Monday, March 16 update on X, formerly known as Twitter, the Catholic Church’s first American pope called on journalists to report on the Iran war truthfully and not soften its brutal realities.
Pope Leo tweetedIn the intense situations of war, information needs to be cautious about becoming propaganda. It is the responsibility of every journalist to confirm the news, so they do not end up amplifying power. They should highlight the suffering that war always causes among people, which means presenting the reality of war and telling its story from the perspective of those affected.
Journalist John Harwood noted the Pope’s candor, tweeting, “The Pope criticizing Trump’s authoritarian tendencies.”
Patrick Strother, the head of Strothers Communications Group, shared, “This marks the 33rd war the United States has initiated or been involved in throughout my lifetime. Propaganda was crucial in promoting these conflicts, yet they didn’t even attempt it for the Iran invasion, giving journalists a unique chance to shift perspectives on the growing senselessness of killing ‘enemies.’”
