Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’sstatements made early Thursday were called into doubt following an American F-35 fighter jet being forced to make an emergency landing after allegedly coming under Iranian fire during a combat operation overIran.

Haley Britzky, a national security reporter for CNN, mentioned that the event was still being looked into, although sources indicated that Iranian fire had led to the fighter jet making an emergency landing. This reportedly marked the first documented instance in which Iran struck a U.S. aircraft. The pilot was said to be in good condition, and the plane landed without further issues.

“Secretary Hegseth has repeatedly stated at these press briefings over the past few weeks that he has achieved a clear victory,” Britzky said.

He stated today that the U.S. is clearly prevailing against Iran, noting that the air defenses have been significantly disabled, citing very high rates of failure in these ballistic missile and drone attacks,” Britzky said. “We, naturally, still aren’t certain exactly what occurred here or what struck this aircraft, but it does prompt questions about the effectiveness of these strikes if Iran is still capable of doing this and targeting a U.S. aircraft in such a manner.
