During an late Thursday afternoon, March 19 press eventInside the White House, U.S. President Donald Trump reinforced his assertion that the United States’ conflict with Iran is proceeding very successfully. Trump stated that the Iranian armed forces are now so weakened that they are unable to carry out substantial attacks on American military forces. However, just moments before, CNN reported that Iran had targeted a U.S. fighter jet.
Trump, speaking to journalists, commented on Iran, “Their navy has disappeared. Their air force is no more. Their anti-aircraft systems are gone. Their leaders have vanished. We can fly anywhere we want; no one is even firing at us. … And, as you know, their leadership is gone.”
But on X, CNN’s Haley Britzky reported, “New: An F-35 fighter jet from the United States made an emergency landing at a US airbase in the Middle East after it was hit by what is thought to be Iranian fire, according to two sources who informed me and [CNN’s Oren Liebermann]. Capt. Tim Hawkins, a spokesperson for CENTCOM, stated that an F-35 landed safely following a combat mission over Iran and that the pilot is in stable condition.”
Reposting a report from his colleaguesregarding the Iranian strike against the U.S. fighter jet,CNN’s Daniel Dale— recognized for his rigorous fact-checking of Trump — shared, “‘We’re flying wherever we want — we have nobody even shooting at us,’ President Trump states shortly after this report.”
