Renowned chef and tennis enthusiast Marcus Wareing has celebrated a legal win for the £200 million Wimbledon expansion, stating it will ensure the event’s position in the global sports arena for the next hundred years.
A recent High Court decision last week allowed The All England Club to proceed with plans to build a nearby golf course – causing disappointment among activist groups.
The club aims to construct 39 new grass courts and an 8,000-capacity stadium, enabling it to hold qualifying matches on its premises and remain competitive with the three-week major tournaments – the Australian, French, and US Opens.
The MasterChef judge, residing in SW19, has collaborated with the club in recent years to develop menus for the championship, and expressed his hope that all residents would come to value the advantages of a larger facility.
Wareing, 55, said to The Mail on Sunday: ‘I’ve been living in Wimbledon for 11 years, and this remarkable club, which is full of a lot of history, stands out as superior to other tennis events.’
If Wimbledon wants to maintain its lead over other Grand Slams, it must evolve and advance.
This renewal of fresh land is essential for the coming century, and I don’t envision Wimbledon moving forward without it.
I would be disappointed if Wimbledon became a traditional, historical event, and I am confident that the club is looking ahead, as this will also lead to significant investment in new employment opportunities.

The club acquired the property from Wimbledon Park Golf Club in 2018 for £65 million but has been involved in legal issues ever since.
Development approval was given in 2024, yet the issue persisted about whether the land was reserved exclusively for public purposes.
Last week, a judge decided in favor of The All England Club “by a significant margin,” determining that the land was not under a legal trust for public use.
Nevertheless, the campaign group Save Wimbledon Park, the primary opponent of the plan, has pledged to take the matter to the Court of Appeal.
Jeremy Hudson, a representative of the group, stated, “Wimbledon pledged they would never construct on this area, and Wimbledon has the capability to improve because there are current, alternative plans that demonstrate their proposal can be implemented within their existing site.”
