TOKYO – One of the two Japanese citizens held in Iran has been released and is expected to return to Japan soon, according to Japan’s foreign minister on Sunday.
The individual who was released had been in custody since June, according to the Japanese Foreign Ministry.
Toshimitsu Motegi, the nation’s chief diplomat, mentioned during a television interview that the individual was released last Wednesday and boarded a flight from Azerbaijan heading to Japan.
“We are aiming for the early release of the other person,” he stated.
A non-profit group mentioned that the other Japanese citizen is the Tehran-based representative of public broadcaster NHK, who was arrested on January 20 by local officials.
The Japanese authorities disclosed at the beginning of this month that two nationals from Japan are currently in custody, and they have sought their premature release.
