Leader of the People Power Party, Jang Dong-hyeok, during a trip to Daegu on the 22nd, said, “All issues concerning nominations fall under my duty as party leader.” He further mentioned, “I apologize for the different debates that occurred during the nomination process as the party leader.” This is the first instance where Jang has expressed regret over claims of pre-determined nominations for the Daegu mayoral candidate.

Jang went to the Daegu party office that morning and stated, “The continuous discussion about the (Daegu mayoral) nomination has been on my mind a lot.” He repeated, “I had previously suggested collecting different opinions from Daegu to conduct a primary that the public can support, and I will carry out my responsibilities as the party leader in this process.” He further mentioned, “I will meet with Daegu lawmakers here to fully understand the feelings of Daegu residents and make sure they are considered by the Nomination Management Committee.”

A 40-minute private meeting was attended by all 12 legislators from the Daegu area, including Joo Ho-young (six-term), Yun Jae-ok (four-term), Choo Kyung-ho (three-term), Yoo Young-ha (first-term), and Choi Eun-seok (first-term). Earlier, Joo held a press event where he said, “If the selection process is not equitable, as indicated by repeated suggestions from Nomination Management Committee Chairman Lee Jung-hyun about thresholds, I will not stay quiet.”

Following the meeting, Jang said to reporters, “The message from the Daegu lawmakers was to ask for a ‘citizen nomination.’” He added, “I will speak with the committee chairman to make sure a candidate is chosen that the citizens can support, carrying out my duty as the party leader.” He clarified, “‘Citizen nomination’ refers to allowing Daegu residents to decide who the best candidate is to lead the city. It is a process where citizens can select the individual they believe is most suitable.”

Jang stated again, “I apologize for the different conversations that took place during the nomination procedure as the party’s leader,” and highlighted, “We need to develop a candidate who is strong enough to compete and is accepted by Daegu residents.”
