Two female motorsport athletes were admitted to the hospital following an incident where their vehicle reportedly caught fire before an off-road competition in Mexico.

Kylie Marie Walton and Janey Lee were finalizing their last-minute arrangements for this week’s San Felipe 250 when a fuel cell ‘exploded,’ setting the car on fire.

As per BJ Baldwin, a champion in off-road racing eight times, the fuel cell was located beneath Lee’s seat. Following the explosion, Lee had difficulty releasing her seatbelt as she was ‘on fire’. Fortunately, Walton managed to free herself and then her closest friend.

She assisted in getting her out of the car and prevented Janey from being entirely burned,” Baldwin said. “The car is completely ruined – it’s just ashes and metal frames.

According to reports, Walton experienced burns on her hands, whereas Lee suffered injuries to her legs and feet from the fire.

Two motorsport athletes were first attended to at the location before being transported via private jet to a burn center in San Diego. ‘Both are currently stable and receiving medical treatment,’ officials stated on Wednesday.

“Let’s hope for the best,” Baldwin said in a video on Instagram. Another video about the ‘crazy incident,’shared by former MMA fighter Donald Cerrone, seemed to display the burning remains of the vehicle in which Lee and Walton were ‘trapped.’ Cerrone stated: ‘They are severely burned… keep them in your prayers.’

The San Felipe 250 is a 250-mile competition taking place on the Baja California peninsula. It marks the opening event of the 2026 SCORE World Desert Championship.

Lee and Walton are more recognized for their involvement with the Monster Energy Girls, a group of women frequently spotted posing with athletes at motorsport and MMA events.

However, in recent years, they have taken the driver’s seat themselves. Last September, they made their debut in a SCORE event.

“Sending all our love and positive energy to Kylie and Janey,” Monster Energy stated. The Daily Mail reached out to SCORE International for further details about the incident.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the regulatory authority stated: ‘This morning, SCORE International representatives learned about an incident involving two athletes and their pre-race vehicle in San Felipe.’

Both are currently stable and under medical attention. Thanks to the quick action of people nearby, they got initial care on site before being taken to the United States for more urgent treatment.

This activity is rooted in a close-knit community, and events like these resonate throughout the entire group. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them, their families, and their teams.
