Sen. Lisa Murkowski may issue a challenge, aiming directly at theTrump administration’s Iran war, as stated in a report.

The Alaska Republican, tired of being kept in the dark aboutcombat operations, is subtly working on a bill that would compel Congress to cast a potentially volatile vote on whether toformally approve the use of armed forceagainst Iran, The New York Times reported on Thursday. This action indicates significant divisions among Republican members only months ahead of the midterm elections.

“Ms. Murkowski referred to the action on Thursday as a gesture of desperation aimed at establishing some boundaries for the operation, as the Trump administration has declined to respond to Congress regarding its goals, expenses, and schedule, and has excluded legislators from its decision-making process concerning the conflict,” the Times reported.

The news arrives as surveys indicate the unliked conflict has become a political risk, but Republicans have mostly united to prevent Democratic attempts to limit presidential authority over war. A vote on authorization would require legislators to publicly support the war.

“We need to have a clearer understanding of our direction,” she stated.

“This president entered office claiming he would be the peace president,” Murkowski said. “How many times has he stated, ‘We don’t like these prolonged conflicts, these endless wars?’ People are asking me, ‘Is that what we’re heading towards?’ And I can’t genuinely tell them the answer, because I don’t know it,” Murkowski admitted.

Trump notably ran for office as the “peace president” promising to put an end to the nation’s long history of continuous conflicts.

The Congress is heading into a break on Friday, which means any vote will take place after they come back.
