A former French police officer was taken into custody following the discovery of the deaths of his 12-year-old son’s mother and his 18-month-old daughter’s mother in Portugal.

Cedric Prizzon, once part of the Paris police force and a former rugby league youth international, is also an advocate for fathers’ rights who was engaged in a contentious public custody dispute with his ex-partner.

He had lost his custody rights and had previously been convicted of harassing his ex-partner, after he illegally took their son toSpainfor many weeks during 2021.

Portuguese authorities reported discovering ‘two bodies buried… in a remote location’ late on Wednesday, one day after intercepting 42-year-old Prizzon in a vehicle near Meda in northern Portugal along with his two children, a 12-year-old boy and an 18-month-old girl.

Law enforcement discovered a pump-action shotgun, counterfeit documents and license plates, along with 17,000 euros (£14,700) in cash inside the car.

Portuguese authorities stated that the two deceased individuals were the ‘partner and former partner’ of the suspect, although ‘procedures to identify the victims and gather evidence are still in progress’.

A court in Vila Nova de Foz Coa, near the location where Prizzon was held, ordered his continued detention on Thursday night following several hours of interrogation.

He is accused of severe murder, defiling a dead body, and abducting someone, according to legal authorities.

The two children are scheduled to be sent back to France, according to officials.

French authorities have been searching for Prizzon since the women vanished from their homes in the Aveyron region of central southern France earlier this week.

The quest for the well-built rugby prop forward started following his ex-partner’s disappearance on Friday.

A 40-year-old woman failed to report for work at an insurance company, and her son was absent from school.

Prizzon, his new partner, who is 26 years old, and their newborn daughter also went missing from their residence in the nearby village of Savignac.

Investigators soon believed that Prizzon was responsible for the kidnappings.

In the midst of a contentious dispute with his former partner regarding their son, Prizzon launched a social media campaign targeting her, alleging that she was putting their child at risk.

He was also involved in demonstrations together with other fathers who had lost legal custody of their children.

Residents of the two villages where the women resided were shocked by their passing.

A woman in her 60s shared with AFP that while she considered Prizzon ‘unstable,’ she ‘believed he wouldn’t take it that far.’
