On Monday, Kyiv stated that it had apologized to Helsinki following the incident where two Ukrainian drones crashed in southern Finland over the weekend, noting that they probably veered off course due to Russian interference.

“In no situation did any Ukrainian drones target Finland. The most probable reason is disruption caused by Russian electronic warfare systems. We have already apologized to the Finnish side regarding this incident,” said Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Georgiy Tykhy to journalists.

In a message posted on X on Monday, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy mentioned that he had communicated with his Finnish counterpart, Alexander Stubb, and that both parties are “exchanging all essential details.”

Ukraine’s apology follows the incident where two drones landed near the southern Finnish city of Kouvola on Sunday, which the nation’s defense ministry described as a “possible breach of territory.”

“Unmanned aerial vehicles have entered Finland’s airspace. We are addressing this issue with great seriousness,” said Defence Minister Antti Hakkanen in a statement, noting that security agencies have been dispatched to the location for examination.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, addressing the Finnish state broadcaster Yle, mentioned that “it is probable these are Ukrainian drones, but this will be examined and then revealed later.”

Orpo mentioned that Ukraine has recently conducted strikes on Russian areas along the 1,340-kilometer border shared with Finland.

Ukraine targeted port infrastructure along the Russian coastline in the Gulf of Finland multiple times during the past week.

Hakkanen mentioned that the inquiry is still in progress “and additional information will be shared once the data has been confirmed.”

As per the Finnish defense ministry, “a small number of low-flying, slow-moving objects were spotted in Finnish airspace over the sea and in southeastern Finland on Sunday morning.”

The air force deployed an F/A-18 Hornet fighter for an identification task, it mentioned.

“A drone has crashed to the ground north of Kouvola, while a second drone was reported east of the town. The police have sealed off the locations for additional examination,” the ministry stated.
