A violent incident took place during the day on a busy street in New York City, leading to the tragic death of a 7-month-old infant who was in a baby carriage.
As reported by local media, including ABC News on the 2nd (local time), a person seated in the back of a motorcycle began shooting at people around 1:20 p.m. the day before on Williamsburg Street in Brooklyn.
At that moment, several adults and two baby carriages were at the location, with a 7-month-old infant in one of the strollers tragically harmed after being hit by a bullet.
A witness reported that the baby’s parents rushed into a nearby store to take cover following the shooting and found the baby had been injured there. The infant was quickly taken to a hospital but later died.
A witness stated, “The mother of the baby began to scream upon realizing the child had been shot while she was attempting to pull them from the stroller.” No additional deaths or injuries were reported in connection with this event.
Authorities suspect the infant was caught in a violent gang-related incident.
As per local authorities, following the shooting, the two suspects escaped on a motorcycle but crashed into an opposing vehicle about two blocks away from the location. One suspect, who fits the description of the shooter, was taken into custody, while the motorcyclist is still at large.
New York’s Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated, “A life that had only just started was taken in a moment. There are no words to comfort the sorrow this family is experiencing right now,” and added, “This heartbreaking event serves as a reminder that there is still a lot of work left to eliminate gun violence.”
