President Donald Trump’sPentagon leader sparked a wave of criticism on Thursday night following a report that U.S. forces targeted acivilian road bridge close to Tehran on two occasionson Thursday, as Iranian locals assembled in the vicinity to mark the last day of the Persian New Year.
A U.S. military source, who wished to remain unidentified, told The New York Times that American forces hit the B1 bridge on two occasions, a tactic commonly referred to as a “double tap,” and stated that it was a designated military supply line for Iran’s missile and drone operations.
The deputy governor of Alborz province in Iran strongly denied the U.S. description, stating to official media that the bridge was not yet in use and that “there was no military activity at all on bridge B1.” It is reported that the deceased and injured were locals enjoying an outdoor picnic to celebrate a national holiday.
The protests sparked immediate worry among legal professionals.

A former legal expert from the State Department, who focused on the laws governing warfare, informed the Times that the bridge seemed to have been “targeted not for any military benefit but in an attempt to pressure Tehran and create media coverage.”
Trump praised the attacks on Truth Social, sharing a video showing the explosion and cautioning Iran to “MAKE A DEAL BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE, AND THERE IS NOTHING LEFT.”
The bridge was included in a civilian highway initiative that linked Tehran with the Caspian Sea, frequently utilized for trade and weekend trips.
Critics expressed outrage on online platforms.
Previous Human Rights Watch director Kenneth Roth claimed the two strikes formed a “double tap,” with the second one occurringwhile emergency personnel helped the injured, highlighting that rescue personnel are considered protected civilians under international law.
Previous tennis champion Martina Navratilova gave a single-word assessment: “Criminal.”
