Leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, toured the ‘Hwasong District Phase 4’ area, a newly developed town in Pyongyang, and examined commercial facilities that are getting ready to open, including a local version of a ‘pet shop’.

The Korean Central News Agency stated on the 4th that Kim Jong-un “visited several service facilities in the Hwasong District Phase 4 area, which is soon to open, and reviewed the status and understanding of operational preparations.” Kim Jong-un, accompanied by his wife Ri Sol-ju and daughter Kim Ju-ae, toured locations such as the ‘Misan Automobile Technology Service Center’, ‘Hwasong Pet Shop’, and ‘Hwasong Musical Instrument Shop’.
North Korean official media also shared pictures of Kim Jong-un with a puppy at the Hwasong Pet Shop, while Kim Ju-ae was seen petting a cat. Furthermore, other photographs featuring different animals, such as puppies, cats, and rabbits, were also made public. The store is said to offer services like pet washing and grooming, along with a play area.

It seems that North Korea is trying to showcase, both within the country and abroad, that it has the infrastructure to support pet ownership. Kim Jong-un mentioned, “Regarding the rising number of families in the capital and provinces keeping pets, we have recently opened stores that sell animals and a range of related care items, along with offering expert services.” He further noted, “It is important to concentrate on improving expertise while introducing diverse service sectors that can address the increasing material and cultural needs of the population.”
In February, before the party congress, North Korea stated that Kim Jong-un and Kim Ju-ae visited the Hwasong District Phase 4 area in Pyongyang and were seen with a puppy.
