A double Premier League winner with Chelseahas had to leave football early following a collapse during training caused by a heart issue.

On Saturday, it was revealed that Oscar has retired from football because of his health, five months following his hospitalization.

The 34-year-old was hospitalized in November following illness in Sao Paulo during physical pre-season testing with the team.

It was eventually found that he was suffering from vasovagal syncope — a typical reason for losing consciousness following a rapid decrease in blood pressure or heart rate.

He is said to have been unconscious for two minutes and has subsequently undergone surgery to address the issue.

Nevertheless, because of the seriousness of the problem, he has had to retire prematurely and has chosen to terminate his Sao Paulo contract — which was set to expire at the end of 2027.

The playmaker took to Sao Paulo’s Instagramon Saturday to reveal the choice through a heartfelt video message directed at supporters of his childhood team.

“I wanted to contribute more to Sao Paulo, I wanted to play more. I believe I had both the football skills and the age to play more, but unfortunately this occurred,” he said.

I am now going to step back and keep supporting Sao Paulo, living my life as a devoted fan. I am concluding my career with Sao Paulo, a journey that has taken me to numerous locations across the globe.

I want to express my gratitude to everyone for their ongoing support, particularly the fans from Sao Paulo who have stood by me since my return and throughout this challenging period I’m experiencing.

Oscar made a return to Sao Paulo in 2024 following an extended and profitable period spent competing in China, where he secured three league championships with Shanghai Port.

Prior to relocating to Asia, he was closely associated with Chelsea – securing two Premier League championships (2014-15 and 2016-17), one Europa League trophy (2012-13), and a League Cup (2014-15) over the course of four and a half seasons in west London.

He also earned 48 appearances with Brazil, netting 12 goals over the course of his five-year tenure with the national team.
