New Delhi seeks energy supplies from Tehran as the conflict in Iran continues to affect supply chains. This marks India’s first crude oil shipment from Iran since May 2019, following the US lifting sanctions on purchasing Iranian oil. Officials have denied that payment issues were the reason for a tanker carrying Iranian crude changing its course from India to China mid-journey. An Indian convoy belonging to a Congress party official, Shashi Tharoor, was attacked in Kerala. An Indian tanker transporting 46,000 metric tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is en route to Mumbai after passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Here is a summary of recent updates fromIndiafrom Saturday, April 4th and Sunday, April 5th:
Moody’s lowers India’s growth projection to 6% due to the conflict in the Middle East
Moody’s Analytics has reduced India’s economic growth forecast for the current financial year to 6%, down from 6.8% previously.
The rating agency stated that theUS-Israeli war against Iranand its effect on the worldwide energy market will hinder India’s growth pace and increase inflation dangers.
“Considering India’s economic vulnerability due to the continuing military conflict in the Middle East, we anticipate real GDP growth to slow down to 6% in fiscal year 2026-27, compared to the previous estimate of 6.8%,” reported India’s PTI news agency, quoting the Moody’s report.
The agency anticipated that India’s economy would encounter a variety of difficulties, such as “limited private spending, reduced industrial output, and a slowdown in the growth of gross fixed capital formation due to high prices and increased production costs.”
India ranks as the fourth-largest economy globally and is the third-largest importer and consumer of oil. This South Asian country also imports 60% of its liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
Most of these oil and gas resources flow through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage in the Persian Gulf that Iran has successfully closed off since February 28 following US-Israeli attacks.
New Delhi has focused on ensuring energy supply for homes, reducing the amount available for industrial purposes. As a result, factories in industries such as stainless steel and plastics have reduced their output.
As the war continues, worries increase about the growing cost of energy imports and the risk of a larger balance of payments shortfall.
“Although inflation is currently under control, geopolitical uncertainties have shifted the inflation outlook upwards,” Moody’s stated, forecasting inflation to reach an average of 4.8% in FY27, compared to 2.4% in FY26.

The families of those who perished in last year’s Air India AI171 aircraft accident have sent a letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting the disclosure of the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and black box information to uncover the reason behind the tragedy, as reported by media outlets.

India acquires Iranian oil as conflict impacts worldwide petroleum shipments
India has purchased Iranian oil for the first time since 2019, following the USexempted penalties for purchasing Iranian oil, officials stated on Saturday.
Amid supply issues in the Middle East, Indian refineries have met their crude oil needs, including sourcing from Iran; and there are no payment obstacles for importing Iranian crude, stated India’s petroleum ministry in a post on X.
India imports raw oil from more than 40 nations, with firms maintaining complete freedom to obtain resources from various regions depending on business factors, the statement mentioned.
India’s purchase of Iranian oil occurs as the world’s third-largest importer and user of petroleum productshas suffered greatly due to the conflict in Iran, which has greatly affected global energy supplies.
The Indian government was compelled to implement emergency measures to handle the approaching fuel shortage, while simultaneously communicating with Tehran to secure safe transit for vessels flying the Indian flag.
The ministry’s statement also labeled as “factually incorrect” reports suggesting that payment issues caused a tanker loaded with Iranian oil to change course mid-journey from India to China on Friday.
The government did not specify the cause for the shift.
