Hegseth has been asserting for weeks that Iran’s military is weak and lacks air defense capabilities, stating the country would be unable to respond to any potential U.S. attacks; however, it became evident this was not true. During his White House press conference on Monday, Trump acknowledged that a shoulder-launched “heat-seeking missile” had brought down the F-15 deep within Iranian territory.

The White House and the Pentagon have resisted public examination of Hegseth’s statements regarding the conflict.
