Addis Ababa, April 7, 2026 (ENA) —The African Union (#AU)Today marked the 32nd anniversary of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, observed at its headquarters in Addis Ababa, paying tribute to the memory of over one million people who perished.

In his statements, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, highlighted the significance of remembering past events and the shared duty of all.

We recall the passing of more than one million people due to bigotry, apathy, and failure to act.Kwibukais not merely a time of grief, but also an appeal to honesty, accountability, and awareness,” he stated.

He emphasized Africa’s dedication to avoiding further atrocities, cautioning about the risks of hate speech, division, and societal fragmentation.

Africa declares: organized hatred will no longer be permitted to serve as a political agenda. We need to address growing dangers—such as hate speech, division, and polarization—with solidarity, bravery, and decisive measures.

Emphasizing Rwanda’s advancements, he pointed out that the nation’s path of strength and rebirth shows that history is molded by the determination of its citizens.

“Remembrance compels us to take action, to prevent harm, and to uphold human dignity globally. Africa remains steadfast in its commitment to peace, justice, and the safeguarding of everyone,” he concluded.

Other speakers at the event, including Ethiopia’s State Minister Hadera Abera, honored the victims and expressed Ethiopia’s continued support for Rwanda.

“We remain united as Rwanda showcases strength, togetherness, and rebirth. This serious observance underscores our common duty to oppose hatred, genocidal thinking, separation, and apathy,” he stated.

He also emphasized Ethiopia’s unwavering dedication to peace, justice, and human dignity, and to making sure that such crimes are never repeated anywhere across the globe.

On this occasion, Ethiopia also stated that, as the Chair of the AU Peace and Security Council for April 2026, it will hold an open session with the following theme:Crime of Hatred and Genocide Ideology.
