A young man was killed on Easter Sunday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, after a violent confrontation between opposing cult groups, which was reportedly caused by a conflict over a romantic partner.

The event took place on Abakaliki Street in the Mile 1 area of Diobu, where members of the Deybam cult group, referred to as BS and D12 (also known as Doggies and White Eagles), were involved in a violent clash.

The Police Command in Rivers State verified the event, referring to it as a conflict between rival groups and mentioning that an inquiry is currently underway.

Residents claimed the violence arose from conflicts over land control and competition for a young woman in the region.

The circumstances, Daily Trust reported, worsened on Easter Sunday as members of opposing groups unleashed chaos, leading to the death of one suspected member of a cult.

Witnesses reported that the victim was shot by attackers who arrived in a car just after he left to purchase bread from a nearby store.

It was reported that the shooting created fear, prompting locals and those passing by to run for their safety.

Officers from the Mile 1 Division later removed the victim’s body following the escape of the attackers.

The Public Relations Officer of the Rivers Police Command, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, stated that the Police Commissioner, Olugbenga Adepoju, had initiated a search for the offenders.

“The event is connected to a conflict within the cult in Diobu. The Police Commissioner has ordered that those involved be arrested and held accountable. Security measures have been increased in the region,” she stated.
