The right-wing Wall Street Journal isending a message to the American vice presidentfor aligning himself with Hungarian authoritarian Viktor Orbán, possibly to cater to the Tucker Carlson faction of MAGA.

JD Vancewas in Budapest on Tuesday “to interfere in Hungary’s national election,” stated the WSJ editorial board, but it seems to be an attempt “to assist himself in 2028.”

By being in Budapest and holding a rally and press conference with Mr. Orbán, Mr. Vance is advancing his plan to strengthen backing from the MAGA right. Tucker Carlson has a particular admiration for Mr. Orbán, and Mr. Vance aims to maintain no distance from the broadcaster and his followers,” stated the WSJ. “Consider the visit to Hungary as part of the MAGA podcast primary.

But Carlson, who was initially doubtful about the Iraq War,has called Trump’s invasioncompletely revolting and wicked, promptingTrump to respondthat “Tucker has strayed from his path” and “he’s not a true MAGA supporter.”

A significant portion of the “America First” faction within MAGA strongly opposes Trump’s invasion, viewing it as a violation of America First principles. However, if Carlson’s conflicts with Trump continue to grow, analysts note “he could subsequently present himself to a disenchanted MAGA following as the genuine leader of their causeand possibly ‘run for president on his own in 2028.’

Vance, a presidential aspirant, may be seeking to take over the rising Carlson enclave.

Without an underlying agenda, the WSJ states there is no obvious explanation for Vance to support a dictator who has so many contradictions.

“Mr. Vance repeatedly used the term ‘sovereignty’ during his appearance in Budapest on Tuesday to criticize supposed EU interference in Hungarian matters,” but the WSJ labeled this statement “the biggest mistake,” noting that Orbán has never suggested leaving the EU as Britain did in 2016. Hungarians gain from the EU and would not want to lose it.

Furthermore, “Vance’s Hungarian romance” is harmful to U.S. interests, according to the WSJ, especially in light of the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, a U.S. ally, which the WSJ notes is made more complicated by Orbán’s alignment with Russia.

Mr. Vance’s backing of Mr. Orbán is so intense that he is embracing him even as Mr. Orbán could face defeat in Sunday’s election due to dissatisfaction with Hungary’s struggling economy,” stated the WSJ, possibly causing tension with “traditional center-right politician, Péter Magyar.

“American conservatives have many reasons to be skeptical of Europe. However, Mr. Vance isn’t gaining much support for the U.S. by comparing Hungary’s election to the Iowa caucuses,” stated the WSJ.
