Pope Leo XIV remarked, “Christians will never align with those who used swords in the past and now drop bombs.”

As reported by ANSA and other news agencies on the 10th, local time, the Pope addressed bishops from Baghdad, Iraq, stating, “Please assist us in spreading the message that God does not endorse any conflict.”

The Pope stated, “The territory where salvation was born is being defiled by profanity and the harshness of commerce,” and “Life is not valued and is seen as an unintended consequence of ambitions.” He highlighted, “What fosters freedom and harmony is not warfare but mutual existence and communication,” and “No profit should hold greater significance than the lives of the most defenseless.”

Although the Pope did not reference particular people or circumstances, some analyses indicate he was referring to top officials in the U.S. government during Donald Trump’s presidency. Indeed, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is recognized as a Christian, and President Trump has described himself as a Presbyterian. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are both Catholics.

Pope Leo XIV, the first American to be elected in Catholic history, has been facing ongoing disputes with the U.S. government during the Iran conflict. Since his installation last year, he has expressed a critical view of the Trump administration’s MAGA (Make America Great Again) policy. Before the recent Easter, he also stated, “God does not hear the prayers of those who start wars and rejects them.”

In reply, Elbridge Colby, the Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, called Cardinal Christophe Pierre, the Papal Nuncio in the U.S., to the Department of Defense and reportedly criticized him harshly, referencing the ‘Avignon Papacy’ event in the 14th century when papal authority yielded to royal power. At that time, Deputy Undersecretary Colby is reported to have cautioned, “The U.S. has military strength that can accomplish anything it desires,” and “The Church would be wise to align with the U.S.”
