Lee Milne also seized Kimberley by the neck, suffocated her, moved her around, struck her, and rendered her unconscious
Kimberley Milne took her own life in Scotland in July 2023, yet authorities in a significant legal case stated on Friday that her husband’s physical abuse pushed her to this tragic act.
Lee Milne, aged 40, received an eight-year prison sentence after being found guilty in Glasgow’s High Court of causing death through negligence and committing abusive actions. This marked the first instance in Scotland where prosecutors requested a jury to hold an abusive partner accountable for a victim’s suicide.
Lee Milne physically and mentally abused Kimberly,” prosecutor Laura Buchan stated. “He intentionally and brutally took advantage of Kimberly’s weaknesses, which makes him responsible for her choice to take her own life.

The prosecutors provided proof of the physical and emotional abuse and domination that Lee Milne applied throughout their 18-month marriage, which ended on July 27, 2023, in Dundee, Scotland.
Milne seized his wife by the throat, suffocated her, moved her around, held her back, hit her, and rendered her unconscious. He insulted her and attempted to isolate her from her relatives. He restricted her access to funds and transportation and confined her in their apartment without food.
Domestic abuse seldom revolves around a single event,” said Judge Lorna Drummond. “It isn’t solely about acts of violence; it also involves more subtle, yet equally damaging, exercises of power and control within a relationship. These actions accumulate over time, with each instance—whether physical, emotional, or financial—contributing to the next. This leads to growing pressure and fear, gradually undermining self-assurance and autonomy.
The family expressed in a court-read statement their deep sorrow over the passing of their “beloved” daughter, sister, and aunt.
Four months prior to her passing at the age of 28, Kimberly Milne was advised by her sister to separate from her husband.
“What if I leave him when he says he’ll take his own life without me?” she replied via text.
At the time of her passing, Milne had separated from his wife, although they were captured on camera together on Kimberly Milne’s last day.
In a particular video, her spouse is shown driving his vehicle toward her from behind in a parking area and swerving to avoid her at the final second. He then turned around and approached her before applying the brakes.
A little while later, she went to a nearby bridge and jumped onto the highway beneath.
“According to the jury’s decision, you are accountable not just for all your abusive actions, but also for her death,” Drummond stated.
