Beginning in the afternoon of the 20th, with chilly winds sweeping in from the north, the most recent cold weather warnings were announced in Gangwon Province, South Chungcheong Province, and North Jeolla Province.
As per the Korea Meteorological Administration on that day, cold wave warnings were issued for the Gangwon South Coastal Area, Gongju and Geumsan in South Chungcheong Province, and Muju in North Jeolla Province, as morning temperatures on the 21st were anticipated to decrease by over 10 degrees compared to the previous day. Cold wave alerts are issued when morning temperatures are projected to drop by more than 10 degrees from the prior day and remain more than 3 degrees below the typical seasonal level.
This cold wave warning is the most recent in history since record-keeping started in July 2005. The prior record was set on April 13, 2021. For the areas that received cold wave warnings this time, the previous highest records were April 13, 2021, for the Gangwon South Coastal Region and Muju, April 11, 2023, for Geumsan, and March 21, 2019, for Gongju.
The late cold wave warnings were a result of recent unusual high-temperature conditions primarily affecting inland regions. On the 13th, a ‘high-pressure lid’ in the upper atmosphere trapped heat, while warm, moist southeasterly winds from a low-pressure system moving over southern waters led to peak temperatures approximately 10 degrees above the typical April average. Under these conditions, a sudden cold northerly wind caused temperatures to fall by over 10 degrees, fulfilling the requirements for issuing cold wave alerts.
Morning temperatures on the 21st are predicted to vary from 2 to 11 degrees, while daytime temperatures are expected to be between 16 and 22 degrees. The daily temperature difference is anticipated to be approximately 15 degrees.
Meanwhile, yellow dust is anticipated to be brought in by northwesterly winds. On the 18th, yellow dust coming from the Gobi Desert and the Inner Mongolian Plateau is expected to impact the country on the 21st. Because of the yellow dust, fine dust levels across the nation are projected to reach ‘very unhealthy’ conditions on the 21st.
