The South West branch of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, to bring all his children back to Nigeria, where they are currently studying, to participate in the “operation wetie” (Political Violence) he promoted in Ibadan on Saturday.

Makinde referenced the violent political history of “Operation Wetie,” a campaign involving deadly political violence that affected the Western Region of Nigeria in the mid-1960s.

It was derived from the Yoruba expression translating to “wet or soak,” involving dousing homes and vehicles of alleged political adversaries with gasoline and then setting them on fire.

Makinde delivered this provocative statement during the National Summit of Leaders from all Opposition Political Parties in Ibadan, Oyo State today.

In response, through its Publicity Secretary, Hon. Akinloye Oyeniyi, the PDP in the Southwest Zone rejected the summit, stating, “the gathering was a celebration organized to boost Governor Seyi Makinde’s fading political prospects and secure him the vice presidential nomination from the ADC led by David Mark.”

The party, which also labeled Makinde’s statement as careless and inappropriate for a current governor, stated that the Southwest would not be allowed to become a battlefield for political conflicts by any discontented or self-serving politician.

Clarifying the nature of the gathering, Oyeniyi stated, “The event was a meeting organized by a coalition that appeared to be an all-opposition-parties summit. It did not reflect the position of the PDP or the wider opposition in Nigeria.”

Instead, it is to benefit the individual whose plans aim to secure the vice presidential nomination of the coalition through an indirect route.

The party praised former President Olusegun Obasanjo for not attending the meeting, stating that his absence demonstrated to the global community that he is not associated with that group.

Oyeniyi also claimed that the summit was organized by Governor Makinde as a strategy to preserve his image.

“The governor has ingested embers that are now scorching his chest, which is why he gathered those whose records do not show commitment, in Ibadan, to map out a new path leading to more turmoil within their alliance,” he said.

The statement targeted former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and several others, who were said to have participated in the summit, and called on them to follow the example set by former President Obasanjo, ensuring their reputations remain untainted by ongoing disputes.

“The chairman of that already failed and defeatist event did not appear. It is not an occasion worthy of being attended by any reasonable and respected individual,” the statement added.

Speaking directly to the Oyo State governor, the party stated: “There is a distinction between influence and illusion.”

This recent political deception has once more highlighted your self-imposed decline in reputation; and the citizens of Oyo State will clearly express their opposition to all this continuous turmoil in 2027.

The party expressed gratitude to its members in the region and emphasized its dedication to offering a reliable opposition and a feasible option for Nigerians, yet it would not participate in events intended to mislead the public.
