A candidate seeking the presidency under the All Progressives Congress banner, Sagir Maidoya, has emphasized the importance of unity in the party, cautioning that internal conflicts might jeopardize its prospects in the 2027 national elections.

Maidoya, a member of the party from Maiburuji Ward in Kaduna North Local Government Area of Kaduna State, emphasized that unity, adherence to rules, and mutual respect among party members were essential for maintaining the party’s electoral supremacy.

In a release published on Friday, the candidate reiterated his commitment to President Bola Tinubu and the APC’s leadership, referring to the party as a stabilizing element in the nation’s democratic progress.

“The APC continues to be the most significant stabilising element in Nigeria’s democratic development. Having a defined mandate based on the Renewed Hope Agenda, our party has consistently shown ability, strength, and guidance in managing the country’s affairs,” he stated.

Nevertheless, he highlighted that solidarity should come before personal goals if the party aims to achieve success in 2027.

“A unified APC is an unstoppable APC. Only by maintaining unity, discipline, mutual respect, and a shared dedication can we build on our successes and achieve a decisive win in the 2027 general elections,” Maidoya said.

The candidate claimed that opposing groups were already trying to take advantage of supposed divisions inside the governing party via what he referred to as “self-serving partnerships.”

“Recent changes suggest that opposition groups are trying to take advantage of supposed divisions among us by forming temporary partnerships meant to confuse Nigerians and hinder our advancement,” he stated.

He stated, “It is important to make it clear: no alliance formed out of convenience, desperation, or the pursuit of power can match the resilience, sincerity, and authenticity of a party rooted in ideology, public service, and the lasting trust of the Nigerian population.”

Maidoya urged party leaders and interested parties at every level—ranging from local communities to national leadership—to unite and enhance internal unity, while increasing interaction with Nigerians.

“We need to keep our attention on providing effective leadership while strengthening the unity that has supported our success since 2015,” he stated.

Commenting on his presidential aspirations, Maidoya stated that it was motivated by a wish to support national progress and the expansion of the party.

“As someone aiming for the presidency in 2027, my goal is not motivated by self-interest, but by a genuine dedication to support the ongoing development of our party and the progress of our country,” he stated.

He mentioned that he is prepared to collaborate with interested parties to promote inclusiveness and generate local support before the elections.

“The path toward 2027 should not be shaped by personal ambitions, but by a common goal—one party, one objective, one Nigeria,” he stated.

The push for unity arises during initial political shifts and quiet maneuvering for power within major parties as the 2027 general elections approach. Although the APC remains in control at the national level, experts note that internal solidarity will be vital as new and returning political figures establish their positions for upcoming battles.

The group, established in 2013 by combining opposition factions, gained national recognition following its victory over the then-current Peoples Democratic Party in the 2015 parliamentary elections, representing the first instance where a sitting administration was replaced at the federal level in Nigeria.

Since that time, the APC has remained in power, leading to multiple administrations, including the present government headed by Tinubu, which emphasizes economic reforms, infrastructure growth, and social welfare initiatives.

Nevertheless, over the past few months, there have been accounts of changing partnerships among opposition groups and greater political discussions throughout the nation, indicating a slow preparation for the upcoming election period. Analysts point out that how the APC handles internal conflicts and strengthens its support could significantly impact its chances in the 2027 elections.
