Texas Attorney General Ken Paxtonhas defeated sitting Senator John Cornyn in the state’s closely-monitored Republican raceSenate primary.
Paxton, 63, overwhelmed Cornyn, 74, in the runoff election on Tuesday night following a pivotal endorsement from the President.Donald Trump last week.
Paxton was leading Cornyn by 28 percentage points as most polling stations reported on Tuesday night. This marks a devastating conclusion to Cornyn’s extended political career, following his limited disagreements with Trump over the past ten years.
“I have consistently backed the Republican candidate and plan to do so once more in this general election,” the Senator stated following his acknowledgment of defeat.
Cornyn, who was unable to obtain the backing despite months of effort, has been serving in the Senate representing Texas since 2002.
The conclusion of his 23-year tenure arrives as Trump keeps leaving his unmistakable mark on theRepublican Party, demanding severe punishment against anyone displaying the smallest hint of disloyalty.
The long-serving Texas Senator condemned Trump’s reaction to theCOVID-19The outbreak in 2020 has criticized Trump’s actions prior to January 6.CapitolRiot and opposed Trump’s efforts to block the certification processJoe Biden‘s victory.
Paxton’s win ensures he will take part in a fiercegeneral electionopposing 37-year-old Democratic candidate James Talarico.

Serving as Texas Attorney General since 2015, Paxton is a staunch Trump supporter who has endorsed several of the President’s most ambitious initiatives, including a 2020Supreme Courtcase to invalidate Joe Biden’s electoral win.
He has also faced public criticism from his separated wife over his infidelity, even as he’sshacked up withhis lover in a fashionable Dallas neighborhood.
Paxton has endured a decade of ethical and legal challenges, such as an indictment for securities fraud, impeachment, and accusations of corruption – managing to get through each one.
He has managed to get away with a lot for a long time,” Cornyn said to CNN this week. “He is a disgrace.
None of that deterred Trump, who values personal loyalty more than anything else.
‘TEXAS, REMEMBER! Ken Paxton was an OUTSTANDING Attorney General, likely the finest in the nation. He was also extremely loyal to your favorite President, ME,’ Trump shared on social media this week.
Senate Republican officials spent several months trying to secure the President’s support for Cornyn. The leaders reportedly aimed to prevent a costly and chaotic primary battle between two Republicans – although that is precisely what unfolded.
Approximately $130 million has been invested in advertisements during the Republican primary in Texas, as reported by AdImpact, with Cornyn significantly spending more than his opponent.

Cornyn’s final attempt to please the President also failed.
The Senator introduced a bill to name a highway following Trump and changed his previous stance on the filibuster due to growing pressure from the White House.
Trump had not officially supported Paxton until a week ago. His former campaign manager, Chris Lacivita, previously worked for Cornyn, while the head of the President’s political operations, James Blair, supported Paxton, resulting in an unusual split within Trump’s close circle.
Cornyn’s loss is another victory for the President’s group that has disrupted several of Trump’s Republican candidates.
Republican lawmakers Congressman Thomas Massie and Senator Bill Cassidy, who had previously angered President Trump, lost their recent primary elections following the President’s support for their rivals.
Trump also noticed that state-level legislators in Indiana lost their elections after they opposed the President and failed to support his redistricting proposal.
The President’s supporters swiftly rejoiced over the success of their chosen candidate.
