A wealthy individual with a motivating history defeated the PresidentDonald TrumpHis choice for Georgia’s next governor.
Healthcare executive Rick Jackson defeated Georgia’s Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones in the Republican gubernatorial runoff on Tuesday night, and he will now move forward to the next stage.general electionto confront former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.
We achieved more than just winning a runoff,” Jackson said to his supporters in his victory speech. “We demonstrated that the people of Georgia are in control.
NBC News declared the race just before 9:30 pm ET, as Jackson maintained the lead throughout the night.
It signifies the second instance in this cycle where voters have rebelled against the President in a gubernatorial election – the first occurrence took place inIowa.
Trump’s support was waveringOklahomaalso, voters on Tuesday advanced the President’s gubernatorial candidate, former state Senator Mike Mazzei, to a runoff against Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond.
The Georgia contest served as an examination of whether a significant amount of funding could counteract a strong Trump endorsement.
Jackson used $100 million of his personal funds for the campaign, while Jones raised concerns during the final moments of the runoff, stating, “Georgia is not for sale.”

In a peculiar post on Monday, Donald Trump Jr. appeared to be paving the way for a Jackson victory, should his father’s support of Jones not be sufficient to secure the lieutenant governor’s position.
Younger Trump praised Jackson for preserving the US’s final production site for the critical antibiotic amoxicillin, an action the billionaire took in 2021, along with covering the costs of a new oil refinery in Texas.
Trump Jr. stated that Jackson was “furthering MAGA and an America First economy” and referred to him as “a good man.”
‘By the way, this isn’t an endorsement of Rick, and I think [Jones] is also a great guy. My only point is that regardless of who wins tomorrow, it’s a win for MAGA,’ Trump Jr.posted to X.
Jackson also got support from a potential 2028 Republican presidential candidate, Senator Ted Cruz.
Older Trump had supported Jones in August.
“He is a WARRIOR, a successful entrepreneur, a former Georgia Bulldogs football player who won the SEC Championship (renowned for his resilience!), and now, as Lieutenant Governor, Burt has demonstrated the bravery and insight needed to achieve solid outcomes for the remarkable citizens of his outstanding State and Country,” Trump wrote on Truth Social at that time.
Jones quickly admitted defeat on Tuesday night, mentioning an ‘early voting lead’ that was ‘too significant to overcome.’
Jackson did not declare his candidacy until February.
He presented himself as someone separate from the mainstream, with a history that embodied the American dream.

Jackson resided in five separate foster homes in Atlanta and described himself as ‘white trash’ prior to advancing through the sales sector and eventually becoming a billionaire, the owner of Jackson Healthcare.
He backs Trump, even without the President’s approval in the campaign.
“I’ll be President Trump’s favorite governor because I’ll apply the same business-oriented approach and outsider determination to address issues. I’ll be similar to him, but with a southern accent,” he stated in an X post on Monday.
Incumbent Governor Brian Kemp, who cannot seek re-election, maintains a challenging connection with Trump’s MAGA supporters because he validated President Joe Biden’s victory in the state during the 2020 election, a result that the President continues to wrongly dispute.
Nevertheless, Kemp remains well-liked within the state and lent his support to Jones on Sunday.

Georgia’s Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, who had previously criticized Trump regarding his actions in 2020, ran for governor but garnered just 14 percent of the vote in the May Republican primary.
Jones secured the top position with 38% of the votes, closely followed by Jackson with 34%, leading to a runoff on Tuesday.

The Democratic race for governor did not require a runoff, as former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms secured a clear victory in the state’s primary last month.
Georgia has not chosen a Democratic governor since 1998, when Governor Roy Barnes was in office until 2003.
The Cook Political Report has considered the race a dead heat.
The state is represented by two Democratic U.S. senators and supported Biden during the 2020 presidential election.
In 2018, DemocratStacey Abrams, who was the Democratic leader in the state House and gained national recognition, narrowly missed defeating Kemp by less than 2 points.
In their 2022 rematch, Kemp enhanced his win-loss record, defeating Abrams by over 7 points.
