A judge has imprisoned the parents of a three-year-old girl who passed away following extended periods of neglect in a home that was so unclean it was eventually declared uninhabitable.
Matthew Dylewski, 34, and Samantha Dylewski, 33, pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide in connection with the death of their daughter Joycelynn Ann Dylewski in Corinth, upstate.New York.
The case focused on the circumstances in which Joycelynn was living prior to her death on February 19, 2025. Investigators revealed scenes that left even seasoned officers stunned.
During the examination of the young girl, insects were discovered on her face and head. A cockroach was said to have fallen from her hat when it was taken off.
Authorities also reported that her teeth were “decayed and dark,” which created a truly bleak and distressing image of the living conditions she had endured.
Officials stated that Joycelynn had developed anemia due to an untreated lice infestation.
The illness harmed her heart and other organs. She had also received clonidine, a drug used for managing high blood pressure. Officials stated that the mix of these elements caused her death.
The family’s apartment was flooded with trash and clutter, according to CBS 6 Albany. So much so that authorities later had no alternative but to denounce the property.
The pair each appeared individually before Saratoga County Judge James Davis for sentencing this month, following their guilty pleas earlier this year.
Matthew Dylewski was given a jail term ranging from one and one-third to four years, as reported by the Albany newspaper.Times Union have reported. Samantha Dylewski received the same sentence from the same judge a few days prior.
Speaking to Joycelynn’s father in court, Judge Davis was direct. ‘You didn’t fulfill your role as a parent,’ he stated. ‘Your main responsibility was to ensure her safety.’ The judge mentioned that Joycelynn had been entirely dependent on her parents for her well-being.
She was a three-year-old, and you failed in the most terrible manner,’ he continued. ‘This could have been avoided entirely, and it’s unacceptable. I want you to reflect on that.
At the time of his sentencing, Matthew Dylewski informed the court that he frequently thinks about his daughter. ‘I deeply wish that it hadn’t occurred,’ he stated.
I wish I had died instead of my daughter. I still feel that way today… I keep thinking about it constantly. Nothing will ever change. I still long to die so I can be with her.
When Samantha Dylewski received her sentence, Judge Davis mentioned that Joycelynn’s pain had lasted for an extended duration. “Your daughter endured a long period of suffering,” he stated.
He mentioned that even the couple’s other children were aware of what was occurring. “It’s a blessing to have a child. You had multiple children, and each of them endured hardship because of you,” the judge stated.
Samantha Dylewski confessed in court that she had not fulfilled her duties as a parent. “As their mother, it’s my responsibility to keep them safe, and I didn’t,” she stated.
The couple is also prohibited from contacting their four remaining children until 2038.
