Sri Lanka, July 6 — Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa mentioned that he does not plan to step away from political life anytime soon.
Rajapaksa mentioned that he believes he still has more work to contribute to the nation. In response to queries from reporters, Rajapaksa stated that the next presidential candidate from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) will be determined by public interest.
He stated that the SLPP would not approve the presidential nomination for Namal Rajapaksa even if he sought it, unless the public insists on it. The former president made these comments while addressing the media on Saturday following a visit to the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy.
He highlighted that he is profoundly distressed by the present circumstances in the nation and aspires to reinforce the SLPP by bringing together its divided groups.
The ex-leader also mentioned that the present administration lacks compassion or insight into the challenges experienced by farmers.
