Ex-Romania national Gabriel Mureșan passed away at 44 following reports of drowning in a lake close to Apold, the town he had been leading as mayor since 2020.

The heartbreaking news was verified by the Romanian Football Federation, which honored the former midfielder and offered sympathy to his family and close ones.
“The Romanian Football Association expresses its deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and everyone who knew Gabriel Mureșan,” the association stated in a release.
The municipal government in Apold recognized Mureșan, referring to him as “a dedicated member of our community” after his long period of public work.
Mureșan had a notable football career, receiving nine selections for Romania from 2007 to 2011. Throughout this time, he played for his nation in FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship qualification games, including encounters with strong football nations like France and Brazil.
His most fruitful period was with CFR Cluj, where he secured three Romanian league championships in 2008, 2010, and 2012. The team also won three domestic cup titles during his six years at the club from 2007 to 2013.
The midfielder also accumulated experience on Europe’s top club level, participating in three UEFA Champions League group-stage competitions against top-tier teams such as Chelsea F.C., Manchester United F.C., and AS Roma.
During his professional journey, Mureșan represented various teams in Romania such as Dealul Mare Sighișoara, Gloria Bistrița, Mobila Sovata, Gaz Metan Mediaș, CFR Cluj, and ASA Târgu Mureș, before stepping down from football in 2017 and eventually entering the political arena.
UEFA also expressed sorrow for the former midfielder, emphasizing his international career and successes at CFR Cluj.
