As per the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee will hold a review on July 20 concerning Paichai High School’s baseball team, which faced backlash for chanting “스타벅스 가야지” during a game against Gwangju Jeil High School.

The 19th Sports Fairness Committee meeting, set to take place at the Olympic Hall in Songpa-gu, Seoul, on July 20, will examine the case by the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee. Previously, on July 1, the Korea Baseball Softball Association had handed out significant punishments to Paichai High School’s baseball team, such as a six-month ban from national competitions and the loss of the Blue Dragon Flag title.

Paichai High School submitted a request for a review to the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee on July 8. Along with this, the school presented a petition that had been signed by its teachers and staff. On the same day, the institution also made a formal application to the court seeking a temporary measure to halt the implementation of the Korea Baseball Softball Association’s suspension decision.

Groups honoring the May 18th Democratic Uprising also requested the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee to show compassion towards Paichai High School’s baseball team. The May 18th Public Law Three Organizations (the Bereaved Families Association, the Injured Association, and the Meritorious Persons Association) along with the May 18th Memorial Foundation issued a statement on July 9, stating, “The fundamental spirit of the May 18th movement is not about ‘exclusion’ but about ‘inclusion.’ Paichai High School’s bravery in addressing past errors and making amends demonstrates that history is not just a fixed account of the past, but a shared responsibility among all of us today.”

Previously, members of the baseball team from Paichai High School, together with parents and teachers, went to Gwangju Jeil High School on July 6 to offer an apology and pay their respects at the May 18th National Cemetery. Gwangju Jeil High School also requested the Korea Baseball Softball Association to be compassionate towards the players from Paichai High School.
