EcoPro BM revealed intentions to start manufacturing sulfide-based solid electrolytes, a key component for all-solid-state batteries, as soon as 2027. The firm is currently seeking a 1.2 trillion South Korean won capital raise to fund a nickel refinery in Indonesia, highlighting its ongoing initiatives in advancing next-generation materials.
During a corporate meeting in Yeouido, Seoul, on July 16, Kong Bohyun, leader of the Research and Development Division, spoke about solid electrolytes, saying, “We are currently evaluating prototype manufacturing with multiple clients, and the earliest possible large-scale production could be in 2027.” He also noted that test-produced items have successfully passed quality checks from leading battery companies. The company is also working on cathode materials that are compatible with solid electrolytes. This suggests that if all-solid-state batteries are introduced and gain popularity in the market, there is expected to be higher demand.
In addition, EcoPro BM stated that it is speeding up the development of advanced battery materials, such as LMR (cobalt-free manganese-rich) cathode materials and cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. Significantly, the LMR cathode material, which incorporates cheaper cobalt and a higher manganese content, is now in the final testing phase with major customers ahead of mass production. Upon its launch, it is anticipated to be mainly utilized in mid- to low-cost products, thereby promoting the wider use of electric vehicles.
