The Democratic primary for US Senate in MichiganThe rivalry between two candidates symbolizing opposing groups within their party is intensifying ahead of Tuesday’s primary.

Haley Stevens and Abdul El-Sayed are engaged in a fierce contest, yet El-Sayed is experiencing a surge in favorable poll numbers, indicating the underdog progressive candidate nears a major victory.

A win for El-Sayed would create waves within the party, considering that Republican candidate Mike Rogers was caught on tape stating he would be “in good shape” in ageneral election against El-Sayed.

Stevens is currently part of the United StatesHouse of Representatives, and El-Sayed has worked as the health director for Detroit, along with Wayne County.

A recent group of polls indicated El-Sayed was ahead of Stevens by a two-digit advantage.

Stevens had been benefiting from support by state and national figures, along with previous polls indicating her leading over El-Sayed. However, she has recently become confrontational, accusing El-Sayed of blaming Jewish Americans for his challenges.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) has played a significant role in the primary, with some reports indicating that its political action committee has spent over $30 million opposing El-Sayed and supporting Stevens.

It’s the biggest single-race expenditure in AIPAC’s history.

Several Republicans are eager to challenge El-Sayed, who has the support of the country’s most liberal celebrities, such as Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

El-Sayed and Stevens have had disagreements regarding their backing of Israel. He has referred to Israel as a ‘rogue state,’ whereas Stevens is facing the growing dislike from Democrats towards AIPAC and her consistent support for Israel.

Previously, El-Sayed promised to ‘fight against greedy landlords and corporate profiteers.’ He has also supported ‘Medicare for All’ initiatives, even though his wife only paid out-of-pocket at her psychiatric practice.

The Michigan Senate position is considered a ‘toss-up’ according to the Cook Political Report, and the race is for an open seat following the departure of the current holder.DemocratGary Peters decided not to seek another term.

Peters supported Stevens in the primary this week, as did Governor Gretchen Whitmer, whose popularity within the Democratic party has declined this year.

El-Sayed mentioned that his win could enable him to impact the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination.

The implications go far beyond the upcoming Tuesday.

Six days prior to the Michigan Democrats casting their votes, the Democratic National Committee’s regulatory committee decided to grant the state one of only six highly sought-after positions in the initial phase of the 2028 presidential nomination schedule.

This implies that the victor of this intense primary will have a platform in a state that votes prior to Super Tuesday on March 7, 2028.
