The head of the DAP stated that it is the appropriate moment for new leadership to assume control of the state branch.
Democratic Action Party (DAP) secretary general Anthony Loke has stepped down as the party’s Negeri Sembilan leader after the party’s results in the latest Malaysian state elections.election.
Loke revealed his choice following a DAP central executive committee (CEC) meeting on Monday evening, stating that it was the appropriate moment for fresh leadership to assume control of the state branch.
“In the recent Negeri Sembilan state election, we were able to keep nine seats,” he stated.

Compared to 2004, we are now more powerful. Therefore, I believe this is the ideal time for someone else to assume leadership of Negeri Sembilan DAP.
Loke mentioned that the next state chairman would be selected from the existing committee members.
He stated that his resignation from the position of state chairman was a personal choice and not influenced by any external pressures.
There was no pressure on me to step down. On the contrary, several CEC members, including Lim Guan Eng, encouraged me to remain as state chairman.
“But I clarified that this is a personal choice, and I believe now is the right moment to transfer the responsibility since I have served as chairman for 22 years,” he stated.
Loke stated that DAP supported the idea of shared accountability, emphasizing that no individual leader should bear all the burden alone.
The Malaysian transport minister was defeated by MCA’s Siow Kong Choon in the Chennah seat by 688 votes on Saturday, ending his attempt to secure a fourth consecutive term as an assemblyman.
Loke previously worked as an assemblyman for Lobak from 2004 to 2013, then shifted to Chennah, where he has been representing since 2013. He continues to serve as the three-term MP for Seremban.
Nevertheless, Loke stated he would remain as DAP secretary general following the support from the party’s leadership.
“I will concentrate on my position as secretary general. Thanks to the support and trust provided by the entire CEC, I believe I have the obligation to keep performing this role,” he stated.
Loke also mentioned that the CEC had resolved that DAP’s upcoming national conference on August 16 would present a proposal for delegates to vote on whether the party should continue in government until the end of the current parliamentary term.
He mentioned that the choice would not be determined solely by the CEC, but rather by the party’s local members via their representatives.
At the national conference on August 16, a proposal will be presented to the delegates to decide if DAP continues in power or not.
“The choice will be made by the delegates, not the CEC. Over 4,000 delegates are qualified to participate in the national conference, and we will trust their judgment to determine if DAP should continue in government for the remainder of this term, or otherwise,” he stated.
Loke stated that this was consistent with the party’s democratic procedure.
“Regarding significant decisions such as this, it should not solely be determined by CEC members, but by the party delegates during the national conference,” he stated.
