TOKYO – Three lions at a zoo in Tokyo have passed away since late July due to suspected heat-related issues, according to the metropolitan government, as extreme summer temperatures persisted.
The three lions were part of a group of 16 held at Tama Zoological Park in Hino, western Tokyo. They were discovered to be suffering from serious dehydration and multiple organ failure.
As additional lions started displaying symptoms of sickness, the park has halted its lion display since July 23.
As per the metropolitan administration, two of the lions exhibited signs like reduced food intake, and treatment began on July 18.
Shortly thereafter, indications of sickness emerged among additional lions, with a total of 10 needing care by July 22.
Zoo employees attempted to use fans, spray water, and provide medicine, but the three lions did not get better and passed away.
