The wife of the Niger state governor, Hajia Fatima Umaru Bago, has urged women, especially those who are nursing, to opt for exclusive breastfeeding, emphasizing that it is the most beneficial option for their infants compared to other forms of baby nutrition.

Promote exclusive breastfeeding, the governor’s wife supports the natural development of essential bodily components, stating, “Breastfeeding will result in healthy babies and the best beginning in life.”

The governor’s wife addressed the first 1,000 days initiative to mark the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week (WBW), which was organized by the State Primary Health Care Development Agency, backed by UNICEF, and financed by the U.S. government. She urged women to opt for exclusive breastfeeding, emphasizing that breast milk is abundant and provides all the essential nutrients required for a child’s growth and development.

I urge mothers to exclusively breastfeed their infants for the first six months; we are also urging expectant women and nursing mothers not to give babies anything other than breast milk during this period, as breast milk provides all the necessary nutrients.

The governor’s wife, who also visited the Sen. Idris Kuta memorial Primary Health Care (PHC) center on the old Airport Road, met five mothers who had recently given birth and presented them with N250,000 as assistance.

She stated, “I am very pleased that the five mothers who gave birth today are already nursing their infants with breast milk, and I urge other women to follow exclusive breastfeeding practices to ensure healthy children and a safer tomorrow.”

Additionally, the Executive Director of the Primary Health Care Development Agency (NSPHCA), Dr. Junaidu Inuwa, stated that the level of adherence is not something that is concrete or quantifiable.

Based on the limited data we have, the compliance rate in Niger is quite high. Breastfeeding in Niger state stands at approximately 49 percent, and we have not yet achieved the national average.

We are putting in a lot of effort to meet the national average, and this is one of the reasons we are conducting this awareness campaign. The national average stands at approximately 56 percent.
