A man in his 50s is currently being probed by authorities after he reportedly threatened another motorist with a hunting rifle during a conflict on a busy street in the city center.

The Changwon Seo-bu Police Station in Gyeongnam reported on the 10th that it is carrying out a preliminary investigation (internal review) into Mr. A (in his 50s) over allegations of severe harassment (special intimidation) for displaying a weapon to another driver during a road dispute.

At approximately 10:30 p.m. on August 8, Mr. A was involved in a verbal conflict with Mr. B, a man in his 30s, regarding a cross-traffic situation while driving on a road in Sodap-dong, Uichang-gu, Changwon, according to the police. Following a tense stand-off while driving next to each other, both individuals eventually halted their vehicles and started arguing.

While the conflict was ongoing, Mr. B reportedly made comments that upset him, and Mr. A is said to have taken a hunting rifle from the back of his car and waved it to create a sense of fear.

Law enforcement officers who arrived at the scene voluntarily took Mr. A to a nearby police station for an initial inquiry before letting him go. The rifle involved in the threat was promptly confiscated.

A law enforcement representative said, “While being voluntarily accompanied, Mr. A mentioned, ‘When the other person made comments about day labor, I pulled out the rifle to demonstrate my identity.’” The representative further noted, “We intend to call him for further questioning to examine the full situation.”

The inquiry found that Mr. A had a legitimate permit for carrying a firearm. The rifle was also verified to have been properly taken out from a police station’s storage on the day of the event for “controlling harmful animals,” according to standard protocols. At that time, neither Mr. A nor Mr. B was intoxicated or driving without a license.

A police representative stated, “We are also looking into possible breaches of the Act on the Safety Control of Firearms, Swords, Explosives, and Other Items.”
