Due to the police carrying out a targeted operation against prostitution during the last two months, the quantity of cases addressed and arrests made has risen considerably when compared to the previous year. This result is due to the police directing their investigative efforts towards breaking up the structure of prostitution networks, including major operations targeting “corporate-style prostitution,” rather than just focusing on single instances as they did before.

The National Police Agency stated on the 10th, “We carried out a special operation targeting both online and offline prostitution between June and July, leading to 761 cases and the arrest of 1,666 people.” This is a 24% increase in the number of operations compared to the same period last year, and a 61% rise in arrests. The number of people detained under arrest went up from 8 to 28.

During this specific enforcement period, the police concentrated on targeting prostitution organizations, including those who operated, managed, and advertised such sites, as well as “corporate-style prostitution” groups made up of three or more people. Consequently, the number of crackdowns on corporate-style prostitution rose four times, from 10 cases in the previous year to 50 cases this year. Although no prostitution sites were closed last year, 11 sites were shut down this year. The police are also looking into building owners who offered illegal premises for prostitution activities. The number of building owners charged went up from 11 last year to 25 this year.

To stop the re-opening of closed businesses, the police also seized illegal earnings. The value of assets seized and preserved before formal charges in this operation has risen sharply from 4.8 billion South Korean won last year to 19.5 billion South Korean won this year. Tax information submitted to the National Tax Service also rose from 18.3 billion South Korean won to 70 billion South Korean won.

Lee Seung-hyup, head of the Crime Prevention and Response Bureau at the National Police Agency, said, “This special operation stems from a firm resolve to dismantle the central framework of prostitution networking groups and to completely reclaim illicit gains.” He further mentioned, “In the future, we will enhance collaboration with relevant agencies and establish an environment centered around enforcement and investigations, including the distribution of advanced computers.”
