Two individuals believed to have succumbed to heat-related conditions were documented in Seoul on one day. This represents the largest daily count of heat-associated fatalities observed in the city this summer.

As per the Seoul Metropolitan Government on the 9th, 35 individuals suffering from heat-related conditions were reported in Seoul on the 7th, with two fatalities. In Jungnang-gu, a 58-year-old man was discovered vomiting and showing reduced awareness on the street. He was transported to a hospital but passed away during treatment. In Gangnam-gu, an 81-year-old woman was found unconscious while sitting at home by a caregiver, who reported the situation, but she eventually died.

The Korean Disease Control and Prevention Agency’s heat-related illness emergency room monitoring system indicated that 386 individuals with heat-related conditions were documented in Seoul between May 15th and the 7th. Across the country, the total number of patients amounted to 3,089, representing an 8% decline compared to the same timeframe last year (3,360 individuals). Nevertheless, the number of fatalities rose from 21 people in the previous year to 29 people this year.

A heatwave warning has been active throughout Seoul since 6 p.m. on the 7th. Earlier on the 4th, the highest-level heatwave alert, referred to as the “severe heatwave warning,” was issued but was subsequently changed to a standard heatwave warning.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government has established a heatwave response center, involving 103 teams and 484 personnel, in partnership with the city and its districts. Since the initial heatwave warning was issued on June 18th, they have provided assistance to 31,308 at-risk groups, such as elderly individuals living alone, outdoor workers, people with disabilities or long-term health conditions, the homeless, and those residing in substandard housing. Additionally, they are managing 9,849 facilities, including cooling centers, climate-friendly shelters, emergency evacuation sites, and mobile worker shelters.
