An Iraqi individual accused of assaulting an anti-Islam activist at aMichiganA protestor is a convicted murderer who is residing in the U.S. without proper authorization, as stated by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Abbas Abdoush was taken into custody by immigration officials and is now at risk of being deported after being released from prison, where he had been detained in relation to the assault on Jake Lang.

Abdoush, 57, faced charges including assault following Lang’s attack in Dearborn on August 2.

Lang was demonstrating against a religious Muslim festival and was heard shouting through a megaphone: “We back ICE. We don’t want these undocumented immigrants here. I invoke the name of Jesus.”

A video seemed to depict Abdoush and others beating him during a fierce confrontation.

Several days following the assault, a judge formally charged Abdoush but allowed him to be released with an electronic monitor.

He had just left prison when Homeland Security Investigations agents arrested him on the same day he was released, and he was subsequently transferred to ICE detention, officials said.Detroit News.

The organization has later disclosed that Abdoush is “a criminal undocumented immigrant from Iraq” who was found guilty of killing a woman in 1999.

“Abdoush was legally admitted to the United States in 1992 and eventually obtained lawful permanent resident status. He later breached the conditions of this admission after being convicted of murder in 1999,” according to a statement from ICE.

The agency stated that he was directed to leave the United States in 2022, but he challenged the decision, and the case is still under consideration by the Board of Immigration Appeals.

He was convicted of murder following Abdoush’s deliberate act of hitting a woman with his car in southwest Detroit on January 25, 1998, as noted in court documents.

“A pair of witnesses saw the victim on Michigan Avenue in Detroit, engaged in conversation with someone inside a van,” stated the appellate court.

As the victim moved away from the van, the driver tried to strike her. The van proceeded along Michigan Avenue, turned around, approached the victim at a fast speed, collided with her, ran over her, and kept moving.

As per appellate court documents, officers discovered the victim face down on the road, making gurgling sounds. Four days later, she had a stroke and passed away.

He served a prison sentence from May 1999 until June 2014, after which he was released on parole, according to a statement from Jenni Riehle, a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Corrections. Detroit Free Press.

Abdoush has returned to detention at the North Lake Processing Center in Baldwin, Michigan, according to immigration authorities.

A spokesperson for the Dearborn Police Department, CPL Dan Bartok, informed the Free Press that law enforcement “did not cooperate or work with HSI, ICE, or any other federal agency” during Abdoush’s arrest and detention.

The Dearborn Police Department follows a guideline that prevents collaboration with federal immigration authorities.

“He was arrested by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, probably because of his connection,” Bartok added.

Abdoush is set to appear in Dearborn’s 19th District Court on September 21.

Besides the assault charge, he is also being charged with battery and willful damage to property.

Lang, a former participant in the January 6 insurrection who was pardoned after serving four years in prison, stated that he is filing a lawsuit against Dearborn, its mayor, and its police chief for not providing him with adequate protection.

A 31-year-old advocate, hailing from Florida and seeking a seat in the US Senate, has stated that upon election, he would ‘prohibit Islam.’

Although he has faced multiple attacks, Lang stated he is preparing another demonstration against Muslims in Dearborn on August 18.

Chief Issa Shahin from the Dearborn Police Department seemed to recognize Lang’s re-entry into the city by encouraging citizens to remain at home and avoid ‘interacting with people and organizations from outside’ their neighborhood.

He also issued the statement in Arabic.
