The Korean Red Cross stated on the 13th that it will initiate an urgent public donation drive to support Colombian disaster victims impacted by the earthquake. Colombia is the sole Latin American nation that sent military forces to South Korea during the Korean War.
A 7.4-magnitude powerful earthquake hit Colombia on the 10th (local time), resulting in at least 241 fatalities and more than 1,600 injuries. The official count of missing individuals is close to 4,000. The earthquake damaged not only houses but also schools, healthcare centers, and various other structures and infrastructure. More than 100 aftershocks have been occurring since the main quake, causing continued worries about further destruction.
Colombia sent around 5,100 soldiers, including both army and navy personnel, to South Korea during the Korean War. It was the sole Latin American nation to deploy fighting forces. A representative from the Red Cross remarked, “Our people’s attention is required to assist Colombians, who offered support during South Korea’s hardest moments, in dealing with this disaster.”
The money collected by the Red Cross will be sent to the impacted regions via the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Colombian Red Cross. The contributions will be directed towards immediate aid and recovery activities, such as search-and-rescue missions, medical care, temporary housing, and support for water and sanitation.
