Lee Seok-gyu, the only remaining patriot from the Honam area, died on the 13th at the age of 100.

Born in Wanju, Jeollabuk-do, in 1926, the late patriot established the “Mudeung Reading Society” while studying at Gwangju Normal School in 1943 and led resistance against Japanese rule. He created and distributed pamphlets and posters to promote anti-Japanese feelings, and in 1945, he coordinated an uprising with fellow activists that was scheduled to occur alongside the Allied forces’ arrival in Korea. Unfortunately, the plan was uncovered beforehand, resulting in his arrest and detention. The government acknowledged his efforts by presenting him with the Presidential Commendation in 2010.

His health had worsened since April, and he was treated at Jeonju Hyosarang Family Nursing Hospital before passing away early on the 13th. Following his death, the number of remaining patriots across the country has dropped to three individuals.

The funeral arrangements have been made in Room 1 of the Special Funeral Hall at Chonbuk National University Funeral Hall. His final resting place will be the National Daejeon Memorial Cemetery.
