The Royal College of Nursing states that staff are experiencing exhaustion as ward temperatures exceed 30 degrees Celsius, while emergency services deal with unprecedented summer demand.
Nurses are experiencing exhaustion at their workplaces due to the intense heat in facilities that are inadequate for the record-breaking temperatures sweeping across Britain.
The Royal College of Nursing stated on Thursday that conditions are “inhumane.” According to the RCN, staff have reported temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) in UK hospital wards and care homes, frequently without access to air conditioning, fans, or windows that can be opened.
With Britain experiencing its fifth heatwave of the year, unprecedented temperatures are causing significant strain on numerous essential services. Hospitals and social care facilities are “completely unready for such extreme conditions,” stated Nicola Ranger, general secretary and chief executive of the RCN. “It’s turning into an unbearable and inhumane environment for both workers and those receiving care.”

Some areas of the United Kingdom are forecasted to experience temperatures up to 38 degrees on Thursday, as the Met Office indicates that this summer could become the warmest ever recorded. Prime Minister Andy Burnham held an urgent meeting with ministers and senior officials on Wednesday to explore ways to manage the challenges being faced by emergency personnel and farmers because of the ongoing heatwave.
Ranger stated that the situations in Britain’s hospitals and care facilities indicate that “climate change is not just a vague idea, but a significant danger to people’s well-being and the services they depend on.”
The RCN provided instances where staff members were physically overwhelmed by the pressure. A nurse employed in a ward lacking proper ventilation required urgent care at the same hospital following a collapse due to dehydration.
Another individual mentioned that the workplace conditions were “unsuitable for humans,” pointing out that a blood machine and a medicine cart had to be taken out to avoid their contents from getting too hot. In a different instance, a member reported to the RCN that hospital administration had prohibited the use of fans and portable air conditioners due to issues with the electrical system.
Yvette Cooper, the UK’s minister for health and social care, stated in an email reply to a request for input that NHS workers are “performing exceptionally well” despite the severe heat.
But I have also made it clear that the NHS must now prepare for summer challenges in the same manner as we do for winter ones,” she stated. “This involves ensuring that buildings are more robust under these new extreme heat conditions, as well as addressing the increased patient requirements.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan mentioned in a different statement released on Thursday that fire departments and ambulance services experienced exceptionally high levels of requests because of the extreme heat. In the previous month, the London Fire Brigade got a new high of 27,580 emergency calls.
This is approximately 3,000 more than in July 2022, when the UK experienced its first-ever temperature of 40 degrees. On August 5 alone, the fire service got over 1,000 emergency calls, including more than 200 reports of grass fires.
In one of the heatwaves during June, the London Ambulance Service handled more than 53,000 calls, exceeding the volume received during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020.
The mayor stated, ‘Our firefighters and emergency medical teams are working non-stop and are experiencing significant stress this week.’
