A Russian missile attack during the night on Thursday resulted in the deaths of at least 12 individuals in Kyiv, with explosions being heard throughout the Ukrainian capital overnight, according to local officials.

At minimum, 33 individuals were injured, as reported by Ukraine’s Emergency Response Team. The air raid warning continued throughout the early morning hours on Thursday.

The attacks targeted 12 sites within Kyiv’s Darnytskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, and Solomianskyi districts, causing damage to homes, a healthcare center, and a school. Rescue teams were on site and managed to extract individuals from the debris.

In the Solomianskyi district, the upper two levels of a nine-story apartment building were destroyed, with fires igniting on other floors. Individuals became trapped in two residential buildings and a school shelter.

A 60-year-old woman named Larysa Bondaruk was seated on the floor, cradling her cat, Chanel, who had been saved by fire department personnel.

She spoke with tears in her eyes, mentioning that the grandson of her neighbor had been buried under the debris and perished. Her apartment suffered significant damage.

A rocket struck the roof. It was extremely loud, and right away, debris and doors were blown out. There were columns of smoke, columns of fire, screams, crying, and a sense of despair,” she said. “Two individuals were killed in our building, but the rescue teams arrived swiftly and handled the situation with professionalism. I am thankful for their efforts.

Russia has increased its use of ballistic missiles against the capital to deplete Kyiv’s air defense resources. Kyiv possesses few systems able to counter ballistic threats, and the supply of missiles for its U.S.-produced Patriot air defense systems continues to be severely limited.

U.S. President Donald Trump initially approved Ukraine’s request for licenses to manufacture Patriot air-defense systems, but subsequently changed his decision.

Ukraine has escalated its own operation of long-range attacks on ammunition storage areas, military installations, and other key objectives deep within Russian territory, aiming to weaken Moscow’s capacity to continue its assaults on Ukrainian cities.
