Citizens throughout Seoul participated in civil defense exercises as alarms rang and law enforcement cleared streets for emergency vehicles. Individuals were guided to subway stations and subterranean shelters, with those evacuated at Seoul City Hall learning how to administer first aid and conduct CPR.
The activity was a component of Ulchi Freedom Shield, the yearly joint US-South Korean military exercise, which also included military hardware and drone simulators for kids. This year’s exercises involved drone threats, GPS interference, and cyberattacks.
The military part has been cut back, but after a request from US President Donald Trump, who highlighted his “very good relationship” with Kim Jong Un. The exercise started on August 17 and will now conclude on August 21, with certain field exercises being replaced by simulations.
The reduced exercise takes place as Washington and Seoul work to keep their preparedness levels up without provoking further tension with Pyongyang. President Lee Jae-myung stated that the civil defense measures focused on safeguarding citizens and maintaining everyday life, rather than getting ready for conflict.
